Summary of CHIN MUSIC RHUBARB – Teens rule, adults drool in this fast paced, emotionally uplifting Young Adult, coming-of-age novel. If you could knead Karate Kid with Perks of Being a Wallflower into one book you would get the perfectly baked Chin Music Rhubarb.

Combining poignant drama with hilarious banter, it actually reads like a fun 80s movie. CHIN MUSIC RHUBARB takes place in the fiction town of Ellington, Florida in the 1986/87 school year. Touching on issues such as racism, classism, homophobia and white privilege through an 80s lens, the book does not pretend its characters know what we know now.

The story follows sophomore Layton O’Her, a troubled teen from the infamous low-income apartment complex in town as he finds friendship, love, the art of hitting and eventually himself.

Growing up, Layton never knew his father and now his mother is dying of cancer. Layton, 15, is a high-octane emotional cocktail of hormones and angst whose love for his mother is both heartbreakingly sweet and hilariously destructive. But her only wish for him is to do what he’s good at; playing baseball. Mom’s wish sets the emotional journey in motion on a collision course against a small town patriarch and disciplinarian Coach Nick. But it takes his relationships with his friends for him to realize that he’s not the only one struggling. Monique, a mixed race girl on the yearbook staff, shows him that his angst is wrapped up in his own sense of entitlement. Furble, whose sexual identity causes him to crack jokes every time there is conflict, (and there’s always conflict with Layton around) helps Layton see the world differently too. His emotional growth takes the story into dramatic twists and ends with an unexpected, yet satisfying turn.
